Marlins 10, Indians 0: Jose Fernandez struck out 14 over eight sizzling innings while Logan Morrison went 4-for-5 with four RBIs as host Miami snapped Cleveland’s eight-game winning streak.
Fernandez (8-5), who turned 21 Wednesday, allowed three hits and topped his own single-game franchise rookie strikeout record of 13 he had in his last start. The right-hander, who threw a career-high 108 pitches, improved to 5-0 at home and also knocked in a run.
Adeiny Hechavarria and Jake Marisnick each had three hits and an RBI while Christian Yelich added three hits for the Marlins. Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez (8-6) threw 107 pitches over four innings, allowing five runs (two earned) and nine hits.
Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera’s fielding error opened the door for Miami to score three unearned runs in the first inning and build a 3-0 lead. Morrison’s double just inside the left field line brought home the first run and Hechavarria capped the rally with a two-out RBI single.
Yelich tripled and scored on Morrison’s single up the middle in the second and Fernandez delivered a sacrifice fly in the third for a 5-0 advantage. Fernandez, whose 14 strikeouts are the most by a National League pitcher this season, retired 12 straight batters before Cabrera’s one-out double in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: 2B Donovan Solano added a pair of RBIs for Miami, which improved its interleague record to 4-8 while Cleveland fell to 7-5. … Cabrera finished with two errors after committing only four in his first 84 games this season. … Miami’s starting pitchers have allowed three runs or fewer in 36 of their last 41 games.
