Padres 6, Giants 4: Everth Cabrera had four hits and visiting San Diego salvaged the finale of the three-game series one day after San Francisco clinched the National League West crown.
With the Giants resting most of their regulars, the Padres broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh on Yonder Alonso’s two-run single off Clay Hensley (4-4).
The Padres snapped the Giants’ six-game winning streak behind a solid outing from Eric Stults (7-3), who allowed three runs over six innings. Huston Street yielded a run in the ninth before recording his 22nd save in his first appearance since Aug. 10.
San Diego extended its lead with two runs in the eighth as Mark Kotsay homered off Brad Penny and Cabrera walked and scored after two stolen bases and a throwing error.
Hunter Pence, Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey each appeared as pinch hitters in the ninth for the Giants, who lost for just the second time in their last 12 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants RF Francisco Peguero went 2-for-3 and singled in the fourth inning for his first major-league hit. ... Padres RF Carlos Quentin was out of the lineup for the 10th time in 11 games with knee soreness. … Giants RHP Yusmeiro Petit gave up two runs over 4 2/3 frames in his first major-league start since 2009 with Arizona.
