Padres 3, Angels 2 (13): An error by substitute left fielder Howard Kendrick allowed pitcher Clayton Richard to score the winning run as host San Diego won a wild one against Los Angeles.
Richard, who is slated to start Monday's game against St. Louis, entered as a pinch-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning and singled off David Pauley (0-1), the seventh Angels pitcher of the afternoon. Will Venable followed with a single that Kendrick booted, allowing Richard to score as the Padres finished off a 3-2 homestand.
Miles Mikolas (1-1) worked the final two innings for San Diego to pick up his first career major-league victory.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game earlier in extra innings. The Angels loaded the bases off Brad Brach in the 10th before Kendrick struck out swinging and Peter Bourjos hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice.
The Padres put a runner on third in the bottom of the 11th after Jeff Baker swatted a leadoff double and Venable laid down a perfect sacrifice. But David Carpenter struck out Cameron Maybin and induced Chase Headley to ground out to first base to end the threat.
Mike Trout went 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and a pair of steals for the Angels, who hit a paltry 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Yonder Alonso hit a two-run double in the fifth inning and finished 2-for-4 in the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Angels pitcher Dan Haren came in to pinch hit in the top of the 13th inning and struck out against Carpenter. He's the first Los Angeles starting pitcher to make a pinch-hitting appearance since Omar Olivares in 1998. ... Kendrick was playing left field because of injuries to teammates Vernon Wells and Ryan Langerhans. Wells departed in the third inning with a right thumb injury while Langerhans exited in the 11th frame after hurting his right shoulder. ... Angels starter Ervin Santana went six innings, limiting the Padres to two runs on six hits. San Diego counterpart Anthony Bass was charged with two runs on five hits over six frames. Both men struck out six.
