Angels 4, Athletics 0: Ervin Santana pitched 7 2/3 superb innings while Mike Trout went 3-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored as host Los Angeles earned a split of the two-game series.
Albert Pujols recorded three hits and two RBIs for the Angels, who bounced back after being shut out for a major league-high eighth time Monday.
Santana (2-6) held Oakland to four hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. The veteran right-hander, who improved to 14-4 lifetime against the Athletics, has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last four starts.
Trout was instrumental in all the scoring. After igniting a two-run rally in the third inning with a two-out single, he delivered a one-out base hit in the fifth and stole second before scoring on Pujols' second RBI single.
Trout then led off the seventh with a home run, depositing a 1-1 offering from Bartolo Colon (3-4) over the wall in center field for his third blast of the year and a 4-0 lead.
Colon remained winless since topping the Angels on April 18. The portly veteran surrendered four runs and 12 hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out three without a walk.
Collin Cowgill singled and stole a base for Oakland, which had won seven of nine at Angel Stadium.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Colon, who won the Cy Young Award with the Angels in 2005, is 0-3 in five starts since tossing eight scoreless innings at Los Angeles in April. ... Pujols raised his average to .212, the highest it's been since April 30 (.217). ... Scott Downs and Ernesto Frieri combined for 1 1/3 scoreless innings to complete the five-hitter.
