Reds 2, Brewers 1: Joey Votto's RBI double capped a two-run ninth inning as visiting Cincinnati took the rubber game from Milwaukee.
Brandon Phillips followed Votto with an RBI single off Brewers closer John Axford (0-2), who struck out the first two batters before running into trouble.
Drew Stubbs started the rally with a single to center and Votto, with Milwaukee playing deep in the outfield, served a soft liner over the second baseman’s head that ended up a double and scored the speedy Stubbs all the way from first.
Aroldis Chapman (3-0) struck out two in a perfect eighth to get the win. Sean Marshall allowed a leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth to Ryan Braun and was replaced by Logan Ondrusek, who recorded the final out for his first career save.
Milwaukee starter Zach Greinke dominated through eight innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out 11. The former Cy Young Award winner struck out the side to finish the eighth but was lifted for a pinch hitter leading off the ninth.
In four home starts this season, Greinke has posted a 1.29 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 28 innings.
Reds counterpart Johnny Cueto was nearly as sharp, striking out five while allowing five hits and walking one in seven frames. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.12 - the second-best mark in the majors.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Since joining the Brewers prior to the 2011 season, Greinke is 13-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 18 regular-season starts at Miller Park. … Braun (Achilles) was questionable for the game but started in left and went 2-for-4 with his 10th homer. … Phillips went 6-for-12 in the three-game set, raising his average from .215 to .253.
