Cubs 11, Padres 7: Alfonso Soriano hammered a two-run homer onto Waveland Avenue beyond Wrigley Field to put the Cubs ahead for good as Chicago snapped its 12-game losing streak.
Soriano’s blast, one of eight homers in the wind-aided slugfest, gave the Cubs an 8-7 sixth-inning lead. Ian Stewart, Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro also homered for Chicago, which ended its longest skid since starting the 1997 season 0-14.
Chase Headley homered twice among his four hits and drove in three for San Diego, which also got long balls from Will Venable and Everth Cabrera.
San Diego ended a 26-inning scoreless streak in the first when outfielder Carlos Quentin, returning from knee surgery, doubled in Chris Denorfia. The lead was short-lived as Chicago plated two in the bottom half on Castro’s run-scoring single and Bryan LaHair’s RBI grounder.
Then the home run barrage began. Randy Wells (1-1) earned the win in relief, while Alex Hinshaw (0-1) took the loss.
San Diego has lost seven of eight and fell to 5-17 on the road.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Golfer Phil Mickelson said Monday that he is part of a group attempting to buy the Padres. Five groups are in the running to purchase the team from majority owner John Moores. ... Cubs leadoff hitter David DeJesus tripled twice, though the second resulted from a misplayed fly ball. ... San Diego starter Jeff Suppan and Chicago starter Travis Wood each gave up six runs over five innings.
