Cardinals 11, Royals 4: Carlos Beltran had four RBIs and visiting St. Louis scored 10 runs in the first two innings while routing Kansas City.
Joe Kelly (1-0) gave up three runs and nine hits in six innings to notch his first major-league victory.
Beltran smacked two-run doubles in each of the first two innings in his first game in Kansas City since the Royals dealt him to the Houston Astros during the 2004 campaign.
Beltran hit a two-run double to fuel a four-run first that included a run-scoring single by Yadier Molina and a sacrifice fly by Matt Carpenter. He added a two-run double in the six-run second inning to knock Royals starter Vin Mazzaro (3-2) out of the contest. David Freese and Tyler Greene added two-run doubles later in the inning.
Freese and Matt Holliday had three hits apiece as St. Louis racked up 17 overall to win for the ninth time in the past 12 meetings in Kansas City.
Kansas City scored in the first on three consecutive singles, with Eric Hosmer’s hit driving in the run. Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Billy Butler had a run-scoring single in the ninth for the Royals.
Mazzaro allowed seven runs and six hits in 1 1/3 innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Holliday had a four-hit game against the Royals on June 16 … Kansas City pitcher Felipe Paulino is done for the season and will likely need Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery … St. Louis activated Carpenter (oblique) and outfielder Jon Jay (shoulder) prior to the game … Perez was playing for the first time this season after being activated from the disabled list due to a knee injury in March.
