Indians 4, Cardinals 1: Jason Kipnis turned on an inside fastball for a three-run, ninth-inning homer, snapping a 1-1 tie and lifting visiting Cleveland in the rubber game of the interleague series.
Johnny Damon led off the ninth with a single off Jason Motte (3-3) and Asdrubal Cabrera walked with one out before Kipnis hammered his 10th homer.
Ubaldo Jimenez allowed one run over seven innings for Cleveland, which has won 14 of its past 20 games against St. Louis.
Cardinals prospect Joe Kelly made his major-league debut and pitched five innings, allowing one run on seven hits.
Carlos Beltran’s 428-foot blast gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead in the first. Cleveland tied it in the third when Shin-Soo Choo doubled, advanced on a groundout and scored on Carlos Santana’s sacrifice fly.
Indians reliever Vinnie Pestano (3-0) walked the bases loaded with one out in
the eighth before striking out Yadier Molina and Allen Craig to end the
threat. Chris Perez picked up his MLB-leading 20th save with a scoreless ninth.
