Phillies 10, Cardinals 9: Rookie Freddy Galvis snapped a tie in the sixth inning by driving in his third run of the night as visiting Philadelphia outslugged St. Louis in the opener of a four-game set.
Ty Wigginton and Placido Polanco matched Galvis with three hits apiece and Shane Victorino drove in three runs for the Phillies, who exacted a small measure of revenge after being bounced by the Cardinals in the 2011 National League Division Series.
Galvis, who had a two-run single in a four-run first inning, gave Philadelphia an 8-7 lead after he plated Victorino with an RBI single off Fernando Salas (0-3). Mike Fontenot followed with a pinch-hit RBI single to score Wigginton.
Raul Valdes (1-0) picked up the victory after working two-thirds of an inning. Valdes came on after starter Joe Blanton yielded seven runs for the second straight outing.
Jonathan Papelbon retired the side in the ninth for his 13th save of the season.
Yadier Molina belted a two-run homer among his four hits and Matt Holliday and David Freese also went deep for the Cardinals, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. With the loss, Cincinnati moved ahead of St. Louis in the NL Central.
Salas permitted two runs on four hits in one inning of work to take the loss.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins returned after missing three games following the birth of his first child. Camryn Drew Rollins was born on Sunday. ... Despite injuring his wrist on Wednesday, Carlos Ruiz was behind the plate for the Phillies.
