Pirates 10, Mets 6: Pedro Alvarez hit his 30th homer and drove in four runs, Garrett Jones homered and had three RBIs and Josh Harrison delivered a two-triple as visiting Pittsburgh snapped New York’s four-game winning streak.
Wandy Rodriguez (12-13) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings to win his fourth straight decision and move the Pirates within two games of .500 as Pittsburgh aims to avoid its 20th consecutive losing campaign.
Alvarez smashed a three-run homer to cap a four-run opening inning to become the third Pirates third baseman to hit 30 homers in a season. The others are Frank Thomas (1958) and Aramis Ramirez.
Justin Turner hit a two-run homer and David Wright added a solo shot in the bottom of the first for New York before Harrison’s second-inning triple into the right-center field gap off Collin McHugh (0-3) gave the Pirates a 6-3 lead.
The Mets trailed 8-3 before tallying three times in seventh. Wright had a two-run single in the inning for his 1,418th career hit, which ties the franchise mark set by Ed Kranepool (1962-79). Pittsburgh’s Garrett Jones hit a two-run homer in the ninth to get the lead back to four.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Wright’s homer was his 20th of the season, marking the sixth time he has 20 or more homers. Only Darryl Strawberry (eight times) has done that more times in Mets history. … Pittsburgh OF Andrew McCutchen went 1-for-3 with two walks to keep his National League-leading batting average at .336. … McHugh gave up seven runs and five hits in 1 1/3 innings in his fourth major-league start.
