Mets 8, Giants 7 (10): Scott Hairston belted his second homer of the game to lead off the top of the 10th inning as New York handed San Francisco its season-high fifth straight loss.
After tying the contest with a two-run homer in the eighth inning, Hairston deposited a hanging curveball from Santiago Casilla (4-5) into the seats in left field in the 10th. Hairston's 14th blast gave him six career multi-homer games.
Rob Johnson provided insurance with a safety squeeze after reliever Clay Hensley inexplicably looked at second base before failing to get Jason Bay streaking toward home.
Rookie Josh Edgin (1-0) secured his first major-league win after striking out two to end a chaotic ninth inning, which saw San Francisco scratch for a pair of runs to tie the game. Manny Acosta yielded an RBI single to Nate Schierholtz in the 10th before stranding Eli Whiteside at third for his first save of the season.
The Mets have won two in a row after dropping 14 of their previous 16 games. The loss kept San Francisco tied atop the National League West with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who dropped a 7-2 decision to Arizona on Monday.
With New York nursing a 6-4 lead in the ninth, reliever Bobby Parnell promptly allowed a lead off single to Melky Cabrera before Buster Posey's RBI double trimmed the deficit to one. Two batters later, Schierholtz was credited with an RBI double to tie the game after his slow bouncer skipped under the glove of charging first baseman Ike Davis.
Cabrera and Ryan Theriot had RBI singles and Marco Scutaro ended San Francisco's scoreless streak at 22 innings with a sacrifice fly in the third.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York's Andres Torres received a warm ovation prior to his first at-bat. Torres, who played with the Giants from 2009-11, jammed his right thumb while colliding with starter Madison Bumgarner during the fifth inning. ... Bay snapped an 0-for-23 skid with a two-out single in the sixth inning. The streak was one hitless at-bat short of his career high, set in 2011. ... San Francisco's Aubrey Huff injured his knee while running to first base.
