Mariners 3, Blue Jays 2: Miguel Olivo homered, Franklin Gutierrez had a two-run single and five Seattle pitchers combined on a two-hitter to edge host Toronto.
Kevin Millwood (6-12) allowed Edwin Encarnacion’s two-run homer and just one other hit in five innings as the Mariners handed Blue Jays starter Ricky Romero his 13th consecutive defeat.
Shawn Kelley, Oliver Perez and Josh Kinney combined for three hitless innings of relief before Tom Wilhelmsen struck out two in the ninth for his 26th save in 29 opportunities.
Seattle’s Kyle Seager had three hits for the second consecutive contest.
Olivo hit a second-inning homer off Romero (8-14) to put Seattle ahead. The Mariners added two runs in the fourth on a single by Gutierrez with Dustin Ackley avoiding the tag of Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia and swiping his hand across the plate.
Encarnacion hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the fourth to get Toronto on the board. The blast was Encarnacion’s 39th of the season and landed in the second deck of the left-field bleachers.
Adam Lind’s fourth-inning single was Toronto’s other hit.
Romero allowed three runs, eight hits and four walks in four-plus innings.
