White Sox 3, Blue Jays 2: Jose Quintana threw 6 2/3 solid innings for his first victory in nearly six weeks as visiting Chicago shaded Toronto.
Quintana (5-2) worked out of early trouble and the White Sox rewarded him with a big fifth inning as they retained their two-game lead over the Detroit Tigers atop the American League Central. Quintana surrendered two runs on eight hits while fanning four as he prevailed for the first time since July 5.
Two relievers bridged the gap to closer Addison Reed, who recorded the final four outs to secure his 21st save.
Rajai Davis went 3-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases for the Blue Jays, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.
With Toronto already up 1-0, Davis used his speed to double the advantage in the third. The veteran left fielder led off with a double, promptly stole third base and came around to score on a Mike McCoy groundout.
The White Sox stormed back with three runs in the fifth inning, all coming with two outs. Alejandro De Aza made it 2-1 with a single to right field, DeWayne Wise tied the game with an RBI base hit up the middle and De Aza scored the go-ahead run when Alvarez's pickoff attempt to first base was high.
Toronto starter Henderson Alvarez (7-10) worked seven innings, surrendering three runs - two earned - on seven hits. He struck out two and didn't walk a batter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: White Sox C A.J. Pierzynski extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the top of the fifth inning. .. The Blue Jays were denied multiple runs in the fifth when Edwin Encarnacion lined out to Chicago 3B Kevin Youkilis with the bases loaded and one out. Youkilis leapt to catch the ball before throwing to second base to double off Davis and end the threat. ... Toronto shored up its catching situation earlier Tuesday, signing Jeff Mathis to a two-year extension with a club option for 2015 and adding free agent Yorvit Torrealba. Mathis is the starter since J.P. Arencibia recovers from a broken hand.
