Blue Jays 8, Tigers 3: Jeff Mathis hit a three-run double and Travis Snider added a two-run homer as Toronto cruised past visiting Detroit.

Mathis, playing in place of injured catcher J.P. Arencibia, was the unlikely hero as the Blue Jays prevailed in the first meeting of the season between the geographical rivals. Omar Vizquel added a double and a triple for his first two extra-base hits of the season in support of Carlos Villanueva (6-0), who worked five strong innings to win his fourth straight start.

The Blue Jays did most of their damage off Tigers starter Rick Porcello (7-6), who was tagged for five runs on six hits over six innings in his first loss since June 20.

Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder blasted the Tigers to a 2-0 first-inning lead, hitting back-to-back two-out home runs off Villanueva - just the second and third homers he has allowed in the past 10 starts. Toronto trimmed the deficit in the bottom half of the frame as Vizquel reached on a double and scored on an Edwin Encarnacion two-out single to right.

The Blue Jays used more two-out heroics in the fourth inning to surge ahead. After Toronto loaded the bases on a single and two walks, Mathis made Porcello pay with a double to left that brought home Colby Rasmus, Encarnacion and Kelly Johnson.

Anthony Gose made it 5-2 with a run-scoring infield single, giving him his first career major-league RBI.

Snider put the game away with a two-run blast to right-center field in the eighth inning, his third of the season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Blue Jays SS Yunel Escobar missed his third straight game with lower back tightness. He was in the original lineup but was scratched two hours before game time. DH Adam Lind was also removed from the lineup with tightness in his back. ... Cabrera's home run was his 25th of the season, giving him nine straight years with at least 25 homers. The longest current active streak belongs to Angels 1B Albert Pujols, who came into 2012 with 11 straight 25-homer campaigns and has 18 so far this season. ... Vizquel's triple was the 77th of his career, tying him with New York Yankees OF Curtis Granderson for seventh among active players.
