White Sox 2, Blue Jays 0: Gavin Floyd pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings and Kevin Youkilis homered as host Chicago won its fifth in a row.
Floyd (7-8) scattered four hits to win for the first time in eight lifetime outings against Toronto. He did not allow a Blue Jay to advance past second and he escaped his only tight spot with an inning-ending double play in the seventh. Matt Thornton recorded the final out of the eighth inning and finished the Blue Jays off in the ninth for his second save.
Youkilis, who is 14-for-45 (.311) with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 12 games since being traded to the White Sox from Boston, broke a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run shot to center field in the fifth inning against Ricky Romero (8-4).
Romero gave up only four hits in six innings, but walked three.
Edwin Encarnacion was the lone Toronto hitter to reach second base against Floyd, doing so in the fourth and seventh innings before being stranded each time. Jose Bautista took advantage of a ball misplayed in the sun for a one-out double in the ninth, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The White Sox are 9-3 since acquiring Youkilis. ... Floyd had been 0-5 with a 7.26 ERA in his career against the Blue Jays. ... Youkilis has an RBI in six straight games. He did not have consecutive games with a run batted in during his time with the Red Sox this year. ... Chicago turned double plays in the sixth and seventh innings ... The White Sox announced Saturday that Chris Sale will not be the American League’s starting pitcher in the All-Star Game.
