Blue Jays 14, Mets 5: J.P. Arencibia and Rajai Davis each hit two home runs and combined for 10 RBIs and Ricky Romero pitched six strong innings as host Toronto crushed New York.
Yan Gomes became the first Brazilian-born player to homer in the majors with a solo blast in the second and Kelly Johnson and Yunel Escobar each scored a pair of runs for the Blue Jays, who have won three straight games by a combined score of 26-7.
Romero (5-1) allowed three hits and one run while walking four and striking out six. The left-hander did not let a runner past second base after the second inning.
Mets starter Jon Niese (2-2) was not nearly as sharp. Toronto pounded on the left-hander from the start, jumping out to a lead in the first inning when Arencibia blasted a three-run homer to left.
Gomes led off the second with his homer to left and Jose Bautista added an RBI single to make it 5-0. Arencibia hit a solo homer and Davis added a two-run blast in the third, ending Niese’s night.
The 25-year-old was charged with eight runs on eight hits in three innings.
The New York bullpen was no more effective as the Blue Jays piled on with two more runs in the fifth on Davis’ second homer, and a four-run rally in the sixth against Manny Acosta and Ramon Ramirez.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Mets C Rob Johnson pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and struck out a batter. … It was Davis’ first career multi-homer game. … The Mets have allowed at least 14 runs three times this season. … Acosta, who was charged with five runs, has been knocked around for at least three earned runs in four of his last 10 appearances, ballooning his ERA to 10.53.
