Mariners 2, Rays 1: Blake Beavan pitched a season-high eight strong innings and Brendan Ryan delivered the tiebreaking RBI double as visiting Seattle beat Tampa Bay.
Beavan (5-6) allowed one run and four hits while outdueling Rays starter Matt Moore as the Mariners beat the Rays for the second straight day after losing the previous nine meetings.
The decisive run came in the top of the second inning when Michael Saunders reached on a bunt single and stole second before scoring on Ryan’s two-out double into the left-field corner to give Seattle a lead that held up due to the solid pitching.
Beavan struck out five and walked none while winning his second straight start after spending five-plus weeks in the minors. Tom Wilhelmsen allowed a two-out double to Matt Joyce and walked Jeff Keppinger in the ninth before retiring pinch hitter Hideki Matsui on a looping pop-up for his 10th save in 12 opportunities.
Moore (6-7) gave up two runs and five hits in eight innings. He struck out seven, walked none and retired the last 17 batters he faced.
The Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on Jesus Montero’s double to center. Tampa Bay tied the score in the bottom of the inning as Ben Zobrist doubled with two out and scored on a single by Joyce.
