Rays 12, Blue Jays 2: Tampa Bay hit four home runs, including Luke Scott’s third career grand slam, and the visiting Rays won for only the second time in their last seven games.
David Price (2-1) gave up two runs over 5 2/3 innings and improved to 10-2 in 13 career starts against the Blue Jays.
After being held to three runs or fewer in five of their last eight games, the Rays exploded for six runs in the ninth inning off Carlos Villanueva, capped by Scott’s grand slam.
Tampa Bay grabbed a first-inning lead on Ben Zobrist’s two-run blast off Brandon Morrow (0-1), who allowed six runs in six innings.
Jeff Mathis hit a solo home run in the second to cut the Rays’ lead to 3-2, but Tampa Bay answered with one run in the fourth and two in the sixth on solo home runs by Matt Joyce and Sean Rodriguez.
Joyce went 3-for-5 with two doubles and his third homer for the Rays, who have won eight of their last 11 games against Toronto.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay center fielder B.J. Upton (back) is expected to come off the disabled list by Friday, and there’s a chance he could be available for Thursday’s series finale. … Luis Perez followed Morrow and threw two scoreless innings, striking out four. Perez has not allowed a run in five games (8 1/3 innings). … Omar Vizquel tallied his first hit with the Blue Jays and No. 2,842 for his career with a pinch-hit single in the eighth.
