Yankees 6, Indians 4: Phil Hughes pitched eight scoreless innings and Curtis Granderson drove in a pair of runs as host New York pushed its winning streak to four straight.
Alex Rodriguez homered and Nick Swisher recorded two hits and scored twice for the Yankees, who have won 14 of their last 17 games.
Hughes (8-6) scattered six hits and one walk while striking out four to bounce back from a bad loss last week. The right-hander, who turned 26 on Sunday, has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his last nine outings.
Corey Wade allowed four runs in the ninth but Rafael Soriano came on to record the final out and lock down his 16th save.
Justin Masterson (4-7) struggled through six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits for the Indians, who have dropped four straight while being outscored 28-7.
New York got to Masterson in the second, when Chris Stewart singled in Swisher and Granderson followed a batter later with a two-run single to push it to 3-0.
Mark Teixeira added a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Rodriguez went deep in the seventh, cracking his 13th homer into the second deck in left off left-hander Tony Sipp.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jose Lopez hit a three-run homer in the ninth for Cleveland. …The Yankees claimed right-hander Danny Farquhar off waivers on Tuesday and optioned him to Class AA Trenton. To make room on the 40-man roster, New York transferred OF Brett Gardner (elbow) to the 60-day disabled list. … Derek Jeter celebrated his 38th birthday with a 2-for-5 effort. … Former Yankee Johnny Damon went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Indians. … Dewayne Wise made the final out of the seventh for New York, when he jumped into the stands in left along the foul line. Replays showed that the ball popped out of his glove as he was leaping over the wall but the out stood, ending a Cleveland rally.
