Orioles 9, Mariners 2: Matt Wieters tied a career-high with five RBIs while Nick Markakis and Mark Reynolds slugged homers as streaking Baltimore completed a three-game sweep of visiting Seattle.
Steve Johnson (1-0) struck out nine in his first-major league start – and second big-league appearance – as the Orioles won their fifth straight game.
Wieters had two-run doubles in the first and seventh innings and also had an RBI groundout in the third. Baltimore unloaded on Seattle starter Kevin Millwood (4-10) for seven runs and eight hits in four innings.
Reynolds hit a solo homer in the fourth and Markakis lined a two-run homer later in the inning as Baltimore built a 7-0 lead.
Johnson allowed a two-run homer to Seattle’s Kyle Seager in the sixth. He gave up two runs, five hits and two walks in six innings.
Troy Patton hurled a scoreless seventh and Miguel Socolovich pitched the final two innings.
J.J. Hardy drove in Baltimore’s other run with a third-inning single.
Seager had three hits for Seattle, which has lost five of six contests since winning seven consecutive games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Johnson was called up earlier Wednesday and replaced Tommy Hunter as the starter after the latter had to warm up in the bullpen during Tuesday’s 14-inning victory. Baltimore optioned Tuesday starter Zach Britton to Triple-A Norfolk. … Mariners 2B Dustin Ackley whiffed three times while three other Seattle hitters struck out twice. ... Orioles utilityman Ryan Flaherty was placed on the disabled list with a bacterial infection and Socolovich was recalled from Norfolk. … Mariners SS Brendan Ryan (elbow) missed his fourth consecutive game.
