Orioles 10, Indians 2: Ryan Flaherty hit a three-run homer and Mark Reynolds doubled in a pair during a seven-run third inning as visiting Baltimore pounded Derek Lowe and cruised past Cleveland.
Miguel Gonzalez (2-1) pitched 6 2/3 strong innings to earn his second career win and Jim Thome hit his 610th career home run to move past Sammy Sosa on the all-time list.
Lowe (8-8) was charged with nine runs in three-plus innings, allowing seven hits and issuing five walks. The veteran right-hander is just 1-5 with an 8.16 ERA in his last eight starts.
Baltimore scored one run on a wild pitch from Lowe in the first inning but really opened things up in the third. Thome led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice that allowed Matt Wieters to reach.
Wilson Betemit followed with a double and Chris Davis was walked intentionally to load the bases in front of Reynolds, who send a drive to deep center to plate a pair. Flaherty followed and got under a 2-0 sinker, sending it into the first row in right-center for his third homer and a 7-1 cushion.
The inning could have been worse if not for Cleveland left fielder Johnny Damon, who leaped into the stands to make a catch in foul territory.
Thome led off the fourth with a no-doubt shot to right, his
sixth homer of the season and first since joining the Orioles.
Gonzalez surrendered two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking a pair for the Orioles, who have won three straight.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jack Hannahan and Asdrubal Cabrera each hit solo home runs for the Indians. … Thome now ranks seventh on the all-time home run list. Next up is Ken Griffey Jr. with 630. … On Friday, Baltimore acquired INF Omar Quintanilla from the New York Mets for cash considerations. … Cleveland RHP Cody Allen was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Friday and made his major-league debut, yielding two walks and striking out one in a hitless inning.
