Nelson Cruz and Mike Napoli hit back-to-back home runs during a six-run fifth inning and the visiting Texas Rangers beat the host Los Angeles Angels 8-4 on Monday in the opener of a crucial four-game series.
Alexi Ogando (12-5) gave up four runs over six innings for Texas, which moved five games ahead of the Angels atop the American League West.
Ian Kinsler had four hits for Texas, which won for just the fourth time in their last 11 games at Angel Stadium. The Rangers have won seven of their last eight overall.
Making his second career start, Angels starter Garrett Richards lasted just five batters before leaving with a strained groin.
Bobby Cassevah (1-1) followed Richards and took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run during his 2 2/3 innings of work.
Russell Branyan brought the Angels within four runs with his second pinch-hit home run in his last three games in the seventh inning.
