Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton hit eighth-inning homers as the Texas Rangers rallied for a 3-2 victory over the host Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.
The homers elevated Texas to its fourth straight win and maintained its lead at five games over the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West race. Texas’ magic number drops to three with seven games remaining.
Kinsler led off the eighth against Grant Balfour (4-2) by hitting his ninth homer of the month and 30th of the season. One out later, Hamilton hit his 24th homer to give Texas the lead.
Koji Uehara (2-3) struck out two in the seventh, Mike Adams pitched a scoreless eighth and Neftali Feliz worked the ninth for his 29th save.
Oakland took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Brandon Allen and Jemile Weeks.
Athletics starter Brandon McCarthy allowed one run and six hits in seven innings.
Texas lefthander C.J. Wilson (16-8) gave up two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out eight to top 200 strikeouts for the first time in his career. Wilson has fanned 206.
Oakland officially announced that Bob Melvin will be back as manager. Melvin was awarded a three-year contract.
