Carlos Peguero’s two-run single off second base broke a scoreless tie in the seventh and Erik Bedard pitched seven shutout innings as the Seattle Mariners recorded a 3-1 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.
The bases were loaded with two outs in the seventh when Los Angeles starter Ervin Santana induced Peguero to hit the ball up the middle. Angels shortstop Erick Aybar was in position to field the apparent inning-ending groundout until the ball caromed off the front of the bag and over Aybar's head into center field to score Chone Figgins and Ichiro Suzuki.
Bedard (4-4) scattered three hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter en route to his fourth straight victory. He hasn’t lost since April 20.
Aybar singled home a run against David Pauley in the eighth to pull the Angels within 2-1 before Pauley worked out of the jam by striking out Bobby Abreu with runners at first and second.
Greg Halman got the run back for Seattle with his first career homer in the eighth.
Brandon League pitched the ninth to register his American League-leading 19th save.
Santana (3-7) gave up two runs and eight hits while losing his third straight decision. He struck out seven and walked three.
Ichiro went 2-for-4 for his fifth straight multi-hit game and stole two bases, including the 400th of his career. Ichiro is one of four active players with more than 400 career steals.
