Madison Bumgarner struck out a career-high 13 over 8 1/3 innings and Pablo Sandoval hit a pair of home runs as San Francisco kept pace in the National League West with a 7-2 win at San Diego on Monday afternoon.
Bumgarner (10-12) allowed an RBI single to Jesus Guzman in the first inning but cruised for most of the afternoon, scattering seven hits and a walk. He finished strong, retiring 15 of 16 batters before allowing a solo homer to Nick Hundley on his 121st and final pitch of the day.
Sandoval opened the scoring with a two-out solo shot against Tim Stauffer (8-12) in the first inning, then added another leading off the fourth to give the Giants, who remain eight games behind division leader Arizona, a 3-1 advantage.
San Francisco, which also got a two-run double from Cody Ross in the eighth inning and two RBIs from Brandon Crawford, scratched right fielder Carlos Beltran from the lineup just before the game due to illness.
Stauffer worked six innings in defeat, allowing four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out one.
