Alberto Gonzalez and Will Venable singled in runs in the ninth inning, and the San Diego Padres defeated the host San Francisco Giants 7-5 on Tuesday for their fifth straight win.
The Giants have lost 17 of their last 24 games and dropped two games behind Arizona in the National League West.
After the Giants rallied with three runs in the eighth to tie the game 5-5, Nick Hundley led off the ninth with a double off Ramon Ramirez (2-2).
Hundley scored the go-ahead run on Gonzalez’s single, and Venable followed with a run-scoring single to right field.
Erik Hamren (1-0) retired one batter in the eighth for his first major league win.
Heath Bell worked a scoreless ninth for his 35th save. The Padres used six pitchers in relief of starter Mat Latos, who gave up two runs - one earned - over six innings.
Kyle Blanks’ two-run blast in the second was the first home run allowed by Giants starter Matt Cain since June 14. Cain allowed five runs - three earned - on six hits over seven innings.
