Ian Kennedy won his National League-leading 17th game and Collin Cowgill hit his first major league homer as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the visiting San Diego Padres 6-1 on Sunday.
The Diamondbacks extended their lead in the National League West to four games over the San Francisco Giants.
Kennedy (17-4) allowed one run, six hits and struck out seven over seven innings and won for the ninth in 10 starts as Arizona swept the three-game series to run its winning streak to six games.
Aaron Hill had three RBIs and three hits, including a two-run homer in the third to give Arizona a 3-1 lead. It was Hill’s first homer since the Diamondbacks acquired him from the Toronto Blue Jays. He added a run-scoring single in the eighth.
Cowgill went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, including an RBI double in the eighth. His homer tied the game 1-1 in the second.
Cory Luebke (5-7) gave up three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings and Orlando Hudson homered for the Padres, who have lost four straight.
