Chris Young ripped a two-run homer and Joe Saunders tossed seven strong innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the visiting San Diego Padres 3-1 on Saturday for their fifth straight win.
The Diamondbacks, who won their season-high eighth straight home game, remained three games ahead of San Francisco in the National League West.
Saunders (9-11) won for the first time in five August starts after giving up an unearned run and four hits. J.J. Putz worked a scoreless ninth for his 33rd save.
After Young hit his 19th home run in the fourth on his bobblehead night, Paul Goldschmidt scored from third base on Aaron Harang’s errant pickoff attempt to first in the sixth.
Harang (12-4) gave up three runs over six innings and lost his first road game this season. San Diego has lost six of its last seven games against Arizona.
Diamondbacks reliever David Hernandez left the game in the eighth after being hit in the leg on a comebacker from Alberto Gonzalez.
