Aaron Harang pitched seven strong innings and Jorge Cantu blasted a three-run homer to lead the San Diego Padres to a 4-3 win over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
After allowing 12 runs over his last two starts, Harang improved to 5-2 after giving up two runs on eight hits with one walk.
Heath Bell earned his eighth save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
San Diego scored four runs in the first inning on Jason Bartlett’s RBI double and Cantu’s third home run of the season. The blast served as the Padres’ first three-run homer this season.
The four runs were the most scored by the Padres in the first inning since July 29, 2009 against the Cincinnati Reds.
After a rough first inning, Arizona starter Joe Saunders (0-4) settled down to throw five scoreless frames. He exited the game down 4-2 after giving up five hits with three walks over six innings.
The Diamondbacks scored two runs in the second on RBIs by Josh Wilson and Saunders. Xavier Nady brought Arizona within a run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
