Chase Headley redeemed himself when he drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.
The Diamondbacks ended Heath Bell's streak of 41 converted save opportunities when they scored three runs in the ninth. Bell was one save short of moving past Trevor Hoffman for the longest streak in Padres history. The streak was also tied for the fourth-best in major league history.
Bell walked the first two batters before Gerardo Parra singled home a run. After Bell responded with two strikeouts, two runs scored on Headley's throwing error on a Kelly Johnson ground ball to third.
Chris Denorfia and Will Venable opened the 11th with singles off Sam Demel (1-2), and Ryan Ludwick reached first on catcher's interference to load the bases and set up Headley's at-bat.
Chad Qualls (1-2) threw two scoreless innings to earn the win.
Padres starter Tim Stauffer gave up four hits and one walk, and struck out six over 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He has allowed more than two runs in only one of his seven starts.
After San Diego scored two runs on one hit in the third, Headley singled home a run in the fifth off Armando Galarraga, who walked six and gave up two earned runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings.
