Bronson Arroyo outdueled Dan Hudson as the Cincinnati Reds snapped a two-game slide with a 6-1 victory over the host Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Scott Rolen and Jay Bruce each drove in a run and Jonny Gomes added some insurance with a two-run double in the ninth for the Reds, who had six hits but were 4-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
Cincinnati did all the damage it would need in the first inning as Hudson struggled with his command. Brandon Phillips reached with a one-out single and Joey Votto walked before Rolen pushed across the first run with an RBI single. Bruce brought home Votto from third with a sacrifice fly.
Hudson (0-2) allowed only one hit the rest of his night, leaving after seven innings having issued three walks while striking out eight.
Arroyo (2-0) scattered eight hits in six innings and surrendered Arizona’s only run when his errant pick-off throw allowed Chris Young to go from first to third. Young scored on Melvin Mora’s single. The veteran right-hander struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Cincinnati put it away with four runs in the ninth, highlighted by Gomes’ hit that scored Votto and Rolen.
