Ian Kennedy pitched eight strong innings, and Justin Upton homered and scored three runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks crushed the visiting Cincinnati Reds 13-2 in their home opener on Friday.
Xavier Nady drove in a pair and Kelly Johnson hit a three-run homer for the Diamondbacks (3-3).
Kennedy (1-0) kept the high-powered Reds' offense off balance all night, allowing one run on six hits while striking out nine and walking one. The 26-year old righthander ran into trouble only once, yielding a run in the third inning on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly.
Arizona’s offense had an easier time against Travis Wood (1-1), getting to the lefthander for a pair of runs in the first inning on RBI hits by Stephen Drew and Upton. The Diamondbacks added a run in the second and broke it open on Nady’s two-run double in a three-run sixth.
The game really got out of control in the eighth when Arizona reached lefthander Matt Maloney for six runs. Johnson highlighted the frame with a three-run shot and Chris Young added a solo blast.
