Gerardo Parra scored on Matt Lindstrom’s wild pitch in the top of the 11th inning and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 7-6 on Friday in the season opener for both teams.
Justin Upton and Miguel Montero each blasted home runs off Colorado ace Ubaldo Jimenez to give Arizona a 6-4 lead through six innings. Colorado tied the game in the seventh with two unearned runs off Juan Gutierrez.
New Arizona closer J.J. Putz retired the side in the bottom of the 11th to earn the save. Sam Demel was the winning pitcher after forcing Carlos Gonzalez to hit into an inning-ending double play in the 10th inning.
Jose Lopez drove in two runs for Colorado with a solo homer in the sixth and a single in the seventh.
Arizona starter Ian Kennedy went six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Jimenez, who allowed five earned runs in his first seven starts last season, gave up seven hits and five earned runs with just one strikeout in six innings.
Rockies first baseman Todd Helton’s single in the seventh inning gave him at least one hit in 12 straight Opening Day games.
