Vernon Wells had four hits, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning, as the Los Angeles Angels pulled away from the visiting Washington Nationals 11-5 on Tuesday night.
The Nationals scored four runs in the sixth - two on an error - to take a 5-3 lead. Erick Aybar belted his fifth homer to lead off the bottom half, and Wells delivered his 10th home run with one out to put the Angels in front for good. Los Angeles added five runs in the eighth.
Aybar also had a RBI double and Mark Trumbo added three RBIs for the Angels, who have won seven of nine games to move above .500 (41-40) for the first time since June 3.
Hisanori Takahashi (2-1) got the last out of the sixth to earn the victory.
Laynce Nix had four hits, including a solo home run in the sixth, for the Nationals. Matt Stairs also knocked in his first run of the season for Washington, which made five errors.
Washington starter Jason Marquis allowed four runs – three earned -- and equaled a season high with four walks in five innings. Collin Balester (1-1) took the loss in relief.
