Maicer Izturis singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Los Angeles Angels spoiled the return of manager Davey Johnson with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals on Monday night.
Alberto Callaspo (three hits) singled with one out and Peter Bourjos followed with his fourth hit of the night, a ground-rule double, to start the rally.
Johnson elected to intentionally walk light-hitting catcher Bobby Wilson to load the bases before Izturis singled up the middle off losing pitcher Sean Burnett (3-4).
Scott Downs (5-2) got the win in relief for the Angels, who have won six of eight games.
Angels starter Ervin Santana allowed five hits and two runs over eight innings, but Jordan Walden blew his third straight save opportunity in the ninth when Danny Espinosa belted a solo home run with two outs to tie the game 3-3. Santana has not won since May 25.
Johnson, who has not managed since 2000 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, took over the Nationals after Jim Riggleman resigned last week.
Michael Morse and Ryan Zimmerman hit solo home runs to give Washington a 2-0 lead.
Wilson’s RBI single in the sixth gave the Angels a 3-2 lead.
Nationals starter John Lannan gave up a season-high 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
