Joey Votto hit a three-run homer and Brandon Phillips drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as the visiting Cincinnati Reds rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Ramon Hernandez added a game-tying, pinch-hit RBI single for the Reds, who won for just the fourth time in 12 meetings with the Pirates.
Garrett Jones’ two-run homer off Mike Leake gave the Pittsburgh a 4-3 lead in the sixth. It remained that way until the Reds rallied against Pirates All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan (0-3), who suffered his third blown save in 34 chances.
Rookie Todd Frazier led off the ninth with a single, Ryan Hanigan walked and Hernandez’s single to left field tied the game at 4. One batter later, Phillips’ fielder’s choice scored pinch-runner Dave Sappelt.
Jose Arredondo (3-3) threw two scoreless innings for the win. Francisco Cordero survived a shaky ninth for his 26th save in 31 opportunities.
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was ejected for the second time in three games for arguing after pinch-runner Josh Harrison was thrown out trying to steal second in the ninth.
