Chris Young belted a two-run homer in the eighth inning to break a scoreless deadlock and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night.
Young's blast off Chris Resop (2-2) followed a single by pitcher Micah Owings to help the Diamondbacks avert a three-game sweep.
It also denied the Pirates (30-31) a chance to move above .500 this late in the season for the first time since August 1999.
Owings (2-0) earned the victory with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief before David Hernandez pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season. Starter Josh Collmenter went five-plus innings, allowing four hits and no runs.
Jeff Karstens threw seven scoreless innings, scattering four hits, and Andrew McCutchen extended his hitting streak to eight games for Pittsburgh, which for the fourth straight time failed to complete a sweep after winning the first two of a three-game series.
