Rob Johnson hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the eighth inning and the San Diego Padres beat the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Tuesday.
Mike Adams (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning, and Heath Bell worked the ninth for his seventh save. Bell has converted 41 straight save opportunities since last May, the longest active streak in the majors.
Johnson, whose previous home run came last May when he was with Seattle, connected off Joe Beimel (0-1) with one out.
Pittsburgh grabbed a first-inning lead on Neil Walker’s two-run double. San Diego answered with three runs in the third off Jeff Karstens, who gave up three runs over four innings.
Padres starter Mat Latos allowed two runs and struck out five in six innings, and hit the first home run by a Padres pitcher at Petco Park, which opened in 2004.
