Justin Upton hit a two-run homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks survived two lengthy rain delays to beat the host St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Thursday at Busch Stadium.
Upton’s 15th homer came off Kyle McClellan (6-6) in the sixth inning after the players returned from a 50-minute rain delay. The game also started nearly an hour late because of stormy weather in the St. Louis area.
Arizona starter Joe Saunders (6-7) allowed no runs and only one hit in five innings, but did not return to the mound following the mid-game rain delay.
Micah Owings, Alberto Castillo, Yhency Brazoban and David Hernandez each worked an inning of relief, with Hernandez earning his sixth save.
The Cardinals, who managed only three hits, scored their only run on Matt Holliday’s RBI double in the sixth inning.
