Daniel Descalso’s RBI single in the top of the 11th inning gave the visiting St. Louis Cardinals a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.
Miguel Batista (3-1) worked two scoreless innings before Eduardo Sanchez retired the side in the bottom of the 11th for his fifth save.
After Ernesto Frieri (1-2) walked Allen Craig to open the 11th, Craig stole second and came around to score the winning run on Descalso’s line drive past second baseman Orlando Hudson.
The Padres, who lost their fifth straight, were outhit by the Cardinals,12-2. San Diego has lost 19 of 27 games at home. The Padres only had four base runners after the fourth inning, and each reached base on a walk.
St. Louis starter Kyle McClellan allowed two unearned runs on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts over six innings.
After Lance Berkman singled in a run in the top of the first, the Padres answered in the bottom half on Brad Hawpe’s two-run home run.
St. Louis' Ryan Theriot’s groundout scored the tying run in the top of the seventh off Aaron Harang, who gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out seven over seven innings.
