Matt Kemp belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers snapped a five-game losing skid with a 2-1 home triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
After St. Louis scratched for a run in the top of the ninth, Andre Ethier led off the inning against Trever Miller with a double to shallow right field to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Ryan Franklin (0-2) relieved but promptly permitted Kemp's deep blast to center field to end the game.
Starters Chris Carpenter and Chad Billingsley were superb, but failed to factor in the decision. Carpenter scattered five Dodgers hits over seven scoreless innings, and Billingsley permitted just two hits over eight innings and struck out 11.
Closer Jonathan Broxton (1-0) was credited with the victory, despite surrendering a run in the top of the ninth which snapped a scoreless tie.
David Freese extended his hitting streak to eight games for the Cards with an RBI single to shallow right in the ninth which plated Matt Holliday, who went 3-for-3.
The Cardinals wrapped a 10-game road trip 6-4.
