Justin Upton hit a three-run shot and Chris Young homered and had three hits as the Arizona Diamondbacks outslugged the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 13-8 on Tuesday.
Juan Miranda added a pinch-hit three-run homer and Stephen Drew doubled in a run for the Diamondbacks, who have pushed across double-digit runs in three of the last five games.
Arizona pounded Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter (0-2), knocking the former Cy Young winner around for eight runs on eight hits in four innings. Drew and Young started the onslaught with RBI hits in the first and Upton made it 5-2 with his blast in the third.
St. Louis put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth to cut it to 9-8, but the Diamondbacks exploded for four more runs in the bottom of the inning, capped by Miranda’s three-run shot.
Armando Galarraga (2-0) stuck around long enough to earn the win for Arizona, getting charged with five runs on nine hits in five innings.
St. Louis' Albert Pujols broke out of a slump with his first multi-hit game since April 2 as he went 3-for-5 with a run scored to raise his average to .200. Colby Rasmus, Lance Berkman and David Freese homered for the Cardinals.
