Milwaukee stormed out to an early eight-run lead and held on for an 8-6 win over visiting San Diego on Tuesday night.
The Brewers jumped on Clayton Richard (1-4) early, building an 8-0 cushion over the first four innings. Included in that outburst was a bizarre bases-loaded sequence in the second inning when Jonathan Lucroy hit into a double play on a two-run single. Casey McGehee singled home a pair of runs in the third, and Lucroy added an RBI double in the fourth.
MIlwaukee starter Shaun Marcum (4-1), meanwhile, cruised early before giving up a run in the sixth and five straight singles to open the seventh as the Padres cut the margin in half.
Kyle Phillips drove in a pair of runs with a base hit, and Alberto Gonzalez followed with an RBI single that knocked Marcum from the game. San Diego made it a two-run game when Will Venable singled home a run against John Axford with two outs in the ninth. A base hit by Jason Bartlett brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but Axford held on for his seventh save.
Marcum struck out eight and gave up just four hits before running out of gas in the seventh. Richard was tagged for 10 hits and seven earned runs before exiting with one out in the fourth inning.
