Wandy Rodriguez dominated through eight innings and added two RBIs at the plate as the host Houston Astros blanked the stumbling San Francisco Giants 6-0 on Friday.
J.B. Shuck added a two-run double and Brian Bogusevic hit a solo homer for the Astros, who have won three straight games for the first time since a four-game streak from May 30-June 2.
The Giants have dropped 12 of 18 games in August and remain 2 ½ games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West.
Rodriguez (9-9) struck out eight and yielded five hits in his longest outing since May 17. The lefthander was removed after 110 pitches, robbing him of a chance for his first shutout since 2009.
Ryan Vogelsong (10-3) suffered his first road loss since 2005. The former Japanese League righthander ran into trouble in the third, walking the leadoff man and allowing a double to Carlos Corporan (3-for-3) in front of Shuck’s hit.
Houston took advantage of an error to score three unearned runs in the sixth, capped by Rodriguez’s two-run single to right.
San Francisco squandered its only scoring opportunity when Bogusevic threw Aubrey Huff out at home to end the second inning.
