Chris Young hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a dramatic 8-5 victory over the visiting Houston Astros on Thursday.
Rookie Paul Goldschmidt hit a game-tying, two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth off Houston closer Mark Melancon as Arizona moved a full game ahead of San Francisco atop the National League West.
Ryan Roberts and Justin Upton led off the 10th with singles off Jeff Fulchino (1-4) before Young hit his first homer since July 2 by hammering Sergio Escalona’s offering deep into the left-field seats.
The Astros led 5-1 entering the bottom of the eighth before Arizona scored twice on Roberts’ double and Miguel Montero’s single.
J.J. Putz (2-2) pitched a scoreless 10th for Arizona.
Carlos Lee and J.D. Martinez each drove in two runs as Houston built its lead. Lee had run-scoring singles in the third and fifth innings and Martinez delivered a two-run double in the fifth.
Jason Bourgeois tripled to start the seventh and scored on Jose Altuve’s single for the Astros. Willie Bloomquist had an RBI single for Arizona in the fifth.
Houston’s Brett Myers allowed three runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings. Arizona starter Joe Saunders gave up five runs and 11 hits in six-plus innings.
