J.D. Martinez homered and drove in four runs to help Jordan Lyles pick up his first major league win as the Houston Astros hung on to defeat the visiting Cincinnati Reds 5-4 on Wednesday.
Reds starter Dontrelle Willis gave himself a 3-2 lead with a solo homer in the seventh, but Martinez answered in the bottom half against reliever Nick Masset (1-5) with a bases-loaded double that drove in two.
Humberto Quintero added a solo home run in the eighth, a run that proved critical when Yonder Alonso delivered an RBI single in the ninth for Cincinnati.
Lyles (1-6) was making his 12th career start. He allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings, and didn't walk a batter.
Martinez put the Astros on top with a two-run homer in the first. Todd Frazier's solo homer in the fifth made it 2-1 and Brandon Phillips tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth.
Willis yielded two runs on eight hits in six innings. Masset gave up two runs and three hits without recording an out.
