Rookie Darwin Barney plated the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and Alfonso Soriano homered as the Chicago Cubs edged the host Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 on Saturday.
Aramis Ramirez added an RBI double and Matt Garza (1-3) struck out 10 in eight innings to earn his first win for the Cubs.
The Diamondbacks decided to go to closer J.J. Putz (0-1) with the game tied 3-3 in the ninth, and Marlon Byrd immediately led off with a single. Tyler Colvin walked following a fielder’s choice and another groundout left runners on the corners. Barney pushed a 2-2 pitch into center to drive in Geovany Soto with the go-ahead run, and Starlin Castro followed with an RBI single to left.
Carlos Marmol worked the bottom of the ninth for his seventh save.
Chicago built a 3-1 lead on Soriano’s 10th homer, and RBI hits by Soriano and Ramirez before Arizona pushed a pair of runs across in the sixth to make it 3-3.
