Randy Wells allowed one run and six hits over six innings and five Chicago relievers shut down Arizona the rest of the way in a 4-1 victory Monday at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs (2-2) got two RBIs from Alfonso Soriano, including a solo homer, and two doubles from Geovany Soto.
It was a frustrating day for the D-backs (1-2). Willie Bloomquist led off the game with a homer, but Arizona had nothing else to show for eight hits and six walks, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranding 11 runners.
Soriano tied it off Joe Saunders with a third-inning blast to left, and the Cubs went ahead in the fourth on Carlos Pena’s sacrifice fly that scored Marlon Byrd.
In the eighth, Aramis Ramirez and Soto hit back-to-back doubles to give the Cubs an insurance run, and Soriano’s RBI single plated Soto for a 4-1 lead.
Carlos Marmol pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save, one day after blowing a 4-3 ninth-inning lead against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
