Matt Holliday smashed a two-run homer to break a scoreless tie in the eighth, and visiting St. Louis evened the I-70 series with a 3-0 win over Kansas City Saturday.
Jake Westbrook (4-3) tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out three. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth by inducing a comebacker for a home-to-first double play, then got a diving stop by shortstop Ryan Theriot.
Converted reliever Nate Adcock, making his first major-league start for the Royals, threw five scoreless innings of three-hit ball.
Holliday’s sixth homer, off Blake Wood, followed a single by Albert Pujols off losing pitcher Tim Collins (2-2).
Pujols went 1-for-3 on the afternoon but still hasn’t homered since April 23. Holliday, meanwhile, is hitting .356 with 30 RBIs.
Fernando Salas pitched the ninth for his sixth save.
