Brendan Ryan drove in the go-ahead runs with a single in the seventh inning and rookie Michael Pineda pitched six strong innings as the Seattle Mariners snapped a four-game slide with a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Milton Bradley added an RBI triple and Justin Smoak had two hits and a run scored for the Mariners.

Pineda (2-1) struck out five and allowed three hits and one run while walking four. The 22-year old Dominican has yet to allow more than three runs in any of his three major league games.

The Royals grabbed the lead on a sacrifice fly in the fifth by Brayan Pena, but Seattle quickly came back, knotting it at 1-1 when Bradley plated Ichiro Suzuki with a triple in the sixth.

Jeff Francis (0-1) hung tough with Pineda through six innings but let it get away in the seventh, when he allowed back-to-back singles to Smoak and Miguel Olivo leading off the frame. The runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt before Blake Wood came on in relief and surrendered Ryan’s single, plating two.

Jamey Wright pitched two hitless innings of relief before Brandon League came on in the ninth, surrendering a run but getting Pena to ground out with the tying run on second for his third save.
